Into the Peaks: My First Mountain Days
My Daily Feast
Chasing Clouds: My Epic First Road Trip from Kolkata to Darjeeling
Tea gardens and mountain views:
A perfect blend
They say the journey is just as important as the destination, and my first trip to the mountains proved exactly that. Leaving the bustling streets of Kolkata behind, I embarked on a long-drive adventure that would take me from the plains of Bengal to the "Queen of the Hills"—Darjeeling.
The Long Drive of a Lifetime
We set off from Kolkata in the evening, the city lights fading in the rearview mirror as we hit the open road. Driving through the night was a thrill of its own, but nothing compared to the changing landscape as the sun began to rise. The drive lasted nearly 24 hours, and reaching Darjeeling the following evening felt like a massive achievement. It was, without a doubt, the best long drive I have ever experienced.
A Taste of History at Keventers
After reaching and freshening up, we headed straight for an iconic Darjeeling landmark: Keventers. Established in 1911, this place isn't just a restaurant; it’s a piece of history. I’d heard that famous movies like Barfi and Satyajit Ray’s Kanchenjunga were shot right on its open-air terrace, and sitting there felt like being on a movie set.
The food lived up to the hype. While everything looked delicious, the star for me was the meat platter. Packed with sausages, salami, and ham, it was the perfect "soul food" to celebrate my arrival in the hills.
Mall Road Magic
With a full stomach and happy heart, we headed to Mall Road (Chowrasta). Even in the evening, the vibe was electric yet strangely peaceful. We spent hours wandering through the shops, picking up souvenirs and enjoying the cool mountain breeze.
Strength flows from the mountain’s heart.
The First Morning Thrill
The real magic happened the next morning. Waking up in the mountains for the first time is a feeling I can’t quite describe. The view was breathtaking—everything felt so calm, quiet, and pure. Looking out at the vast peaks gave me a sense of thrill and excitement that I’d never felt back in the city.
This first trip to the mountains wasn't just a vacation; it was the start of a lifelong love affair with the hills. If you haven't taken that long drive to Darjeeling yet, this is your sign to pack your bags and go!
- Road Trip Tip: A direct drive from Kolkata to Darjeeling typically takes between 15 to 18 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.
- Must-Try: The Pork or Chicken Meat Platter at Keventersis a signature dish often shared by two people.
- Best Vibe: Visit Mall Roadin the early morning for a peaceful nature experience or in the evening to enjoy the lively local crowd and soft lights.
The Rhythm of the Falls and the Taste of the Hills
As the sun began to dip behind the lush green ridges of Bijonbari, the true magic of the mountains revealed itself. Our homestay wasn't just a place to sleep; it was a front-row seat to nature’s own orchestra. Sitting on the wooden balcony, the constant, powerful rhythm of the nearby waterfall became the soundtrack to my thoughts. There’s something about the sound of flowing water in the hills that just feels different—it’s a steady, calming heartbeat that makes everything else fall silent.
Where the train whistles are nostalgia
The beauty of darjeeling
Even now, if I close my eyes, I can still hear that rhythm. It wasn’t just noise; it was a feeling of being completely "in the moment".
Of course, no mountain memory is complete without the food. We spent our afternoon tucked away, slurping on steamed Pahari Momos and hot Maggi. I’ve had them a thousand times in the city, but eating them here, with the chilly mountain air nipping at my skin, they tasted like a revelation. The momos were juicy and filled with local warmth, and the Maggi... well, there’s a mountain secret to why it tastes so much better up high. It’s the thin air, the cold, and the love with which it’s served.
But more than the views or the food, it was the company that made this my best day ever. Traveling with my best friend and his parents felt like being part of a family. They planned every little detail so perfectly, from the cozy homestay to the hidden trails. They didn't just give me a trip; they gave me a lifetime experience that I’ll carry with me forever.
My first day in the mountains is still my best day, and I think a piece of my heart is still back there in Bijonbari, listening to the water fall.
