Chasing Clouds and Prayer Flags: A Sikkim Journey"

Mountains, Memories, and Masti: My First College Trip to Sikkim

Everyone has a favorite person to travel with. This one is mine.

There is something magical about your first trip with a college buddy. The planning, the excitement, and the sheer freedom of being on the road (or the rails!) make it an experience that sticks with you forever. My recent journey to Sikkim was exactly that—a whirlwind of laughter, breathtaking views, and a deep sense of pride.

Whispers in the wind: White prayer flags (Lhungta) carrying mantras for peace and purity to all sentient beings.

The Journey: From Boarding to Bliss
Our adventure began at the railway station in the evening. There’s no bonding quite like a whole night on a train. Between rounds of games, endless food, and the kind of gossip that only happens at 2 AM, we barely realized how fast the time flew.
When we woke up the next morning, the view outside our window had completely transformed. Gone were the flat plains, replaced by the towering, majestic silhouettes of mountains.

        Tracks, trains, and towering peaks.

That first glimpse of the peaks in the crisp morning air gave me a thrill I honestly can't put into words.

Peak happiness... and steaming hot momos.

Finding a Home at Hotel Pandim
After arriving, we headed to  in Gangtok. If you are looking for a place that feels like a "home away from home," this is it. The hospitality of the staff made us feel like family from the moment we walked in.
The highlight? Our balcony. For the first time in my life, I stood there and watched the Kanchenjunga—the third highest peak in the world—glow in the sunlight. It felt surreal to see something so iconic right from where we were staying.

"Sikkim chillies 🌶️ + Kanchenjunga view 🏔️ = Pure bliss."

The Thrill of Nathu La Pass
The next day, we took a car journey to , the Indo-China border. The drive was splendid but challenging; as we climbed higher, the air grew thin, and the cold became intense.

14,140 ft closer to the clouds with my favorites 🏔️✨

A few tips for fellow travelers:
  • Altitude Precautions: Because the altitude is so high (over 14,000 ft), breathing can become a struggle. We made sure to take high-altitude tablets (like Diamox) beforehand to stay safe.
  • The Struggle is Worth It: Every bit of tiredness vanished the moment we reached the border. Seeing the flags of both nations and the endless snow-capped peaks was a lifetime experience.

Saluting the eternal guardian of the Himalayas. Jai Hind! 🇮🇳✨

A Meal with Heroes: Baba Mandir
On our way back, we stopped at the . This shrine is dedicated to a legendary Indian soldier, and the atmosphere there is incredibly peaceful.
What moved us the most was the army camp nearby. The soldiers, who live in these extreme conditions away from their families to protect us, actually served us lunch and snacks. Eating a warm meal prepared by our heroes at the edge of the world was a humbling, beautiful experience I will never forget.

With Baba, above the clouds. ☁️🙏

Sikkim isn't just a destination; it’s a feeling. Between the fun with my best friend and the kindness of the people we met, this trip was more than I ever could have imagined.
